About this page
Pressing a button on this page will bring up a popup window, displaying the results of your chosen search in your chosen catalogue. All the searches re-use the same popup window, so you don't have to close the popup between searches.
If your browser can block popups, in order to see the search results you will need either to turn off this function while using this page or else to add this page to your list of allowed sites.
Unless otherwise stated, keyword-only searches will use any name entered in the author box as an additional keyword term. In contrast, author/keyword searches and author/title searches both search for author terms separately. The title searches on this page search for title keywords rather than initial substrings.
When searching for serials, enter the first few words of the title, omitting any article ('a', 'an', 'the') at the start. While many of the serial title searches are keyword based, a few only search for initial substrings.
Some of the catalogues on this page are 'joined up' so that the same search will return identical results in each case. The two groups are the Foursite Consortium (002, 018, 038, 045) and the Sirsi catalogue of the University of Bath, Bath Spa University College and UWE.
Notes
- [*] This action performs a normal title search. This is because the OPAC lists serial titles along with monograph titles, but cannot search for serials separately.
- [1] Bridgwater College's OPAC demands that you have a cookie set on your computer before it performs a search. If you get a message, "Please enable cookies in your browser," simply refresh the window (in most Windows browsers you can press F5 to do this). Depending on the speed of your computer and connection you might have to do this a couple of times before the OPAC reads back the cookie it has set. [Back to Bridgwater College]
- [2] Sarum College and THUGcat share the same interface and server. In order to ensure that the search is performed on the correct database, these search buttons log your computer out of the interface before submitting your search terms. If you get an error page saying you are logged into the wrong database, simply log out using the button provided on the error page, and re-submit your search from this page. [Back to Sarum | Back to THUGcat]
- [3] If your browser supports frames, the BOPAC search is a two step operation. The first
step will attempt to log in to BOPAC on a random session. If successful, you will see a search
screen load up in the lower frame. If you are waiting a long time, or you get an error message
instead, retry the search. Once you have the search screen up, follow the link in the top frame.
Do be patient for the results screen to appear.
If your browser does not support frames, the search is a three step operation. You will get a screen with two links on it: the first one logs you into BOPAC, and the second one performs the search. If you get an error after following the first link, you will need to retry the search from this page. As an alternative to the instructions on screen, you may find it easier to follow the first link, then navigate back once the page has loaded, and then follow the second link.
– Using more than one title keyword in an author/title search will cause some of the sub-searches to fail.
– On using BOPAC you may be asked for a user name and password. These password requests can safely be cancelled. [Back to BOPAC] - [4] The access to RIDING from this page is less than reliable, unfortunately, due to its erratic monitoring of sessions. This means that you may experience timeout errors. If reloading the page does not work, try closing the popup and submitting the search again. If this still produces the timeout error, you will have to use RIDING directly for a while.
